Detergent Builders
Manufacturers of detergents face increasing scrutiny for the use of detergent builders in traditional formulations. Rivertop understands that detergent manufacturers have reached a tipping point – faced with the challenge to develop different formulations for each market and to maintain their corporate commitment to the environment.
When used in combination with another particular compound, glucarate meets the need for an environmentally-friendly detergent builder.
Detergent builders– typically phosphate-based – offer a chelating function to bind metal cations, resulting in water softening. This function is essential, as they sequester calcium and magnesium ions found in hard water, which would otherwise reduce washing efficiency, and allow the build-up of soap scum residues.
Phosphate-based builders, however, contribute nutrient pollution to surface water. Consequently an increasing number of governments have mandated the reduction or complete elimination of phosphate use in detergents.
When used in combination with another particular compound, glucarate meets the need for an environmentally-friendly detergent builder, without sacrificing price and performance. The glucarate combination softens the water by binding free calcium ions. This prevents those particles from reacting with other agents in the detergent, which would cause them to work less efficiently and leave behind a film of soap scum. By reducing soap scum deposits on solid surfaces and simultaneously inhibiting corrosion glucarate can extend the life of washing machinery.
