Rivertop Renewables has developed glucarate-based polymers that can absorb and immobilize large amounts of liquid.

Rivertop is developing these absorbents into products that enable the gradual release of nutrients in fertilizers. Currently, as much as seventy percent of fertilizer nutrients go unutilized, running-off the field, draining past plant roots and polluting the water.

Controlled release of nutrients over time will reduce the required amounts of fertilizer and help protect nearby rivers and streams from nutrient pollution.

Rivertop’s products have the potential to make fertilizer use more cost effective and reduce nutrient pollution.

Other potential applications for these absorbent polymers include their use in diapers and culture media for tissue engineering.
